As Days Go by

A farmer with a big strawberry field put up a notice: "If you want strawberries, pick them yourself here, pay for those in the bucket, those you eat on the field are for free." A man arrived, took a bucket and returned from the field about an hour later with an empty bucket. So the farmer asked him why he doesn't want to buy any of his delicious strawberries. The man replied: "Yes, they are really delicious. I've been eating all I wanted." Farmer: "But what about your family, don't you think they might want some?" Reply: "Oh well, they'll come tomorrow." - The value-added tax has gone up by 200 - 300 %. the purchasing power has dropped by 25 %. If you spend most of your money on food, electricity, gas, rent, you really feel the increase on every item (between 10 - 50%) also on old stock, often still showing the previous price. Amazing how the poor make ends meet, on the other hand there are still those with plenty of money, nice houses, big cars, etc. I don't envy them, there is already a lot of that around here, even some for us, which may be the reason why we continue to have stones thrown at our house (yes, also during the holly month of Ramadan), and at cats - do they begrudge them their cats' food, or is it just what ignorant, bored and disturbed persons (of various ages) do? Yesterday I found one of my  regular guests at the cats' table lying dead on the middle of the road, bleeding from the mouth and one ear. Can't establish the cause, hit by a car, beaten by a boy, attacked by a dog? All is possible. She was a lovely yellow/white calm cat, approx. 1 year old. A kitten was hit by a car the other day, another one that an old man brought to me, skinny, eyes "sealed", lice (managed to eliminate them with "Frontline" spray), only survived a fortnight. Cats on the whole don't get old here, kittens are particular endangered (cars, children, adults, weak immune system). I found one dying kitten in front of my entrance door, hit by a car, another little one with a head injury from a stone which a stupid little boy with ignorant parents threw, kids told me the cat is dead, but I noticed it is was still breathing and I am happy to say under my care is now well and lively. One minor progress, children watching me feeding street cats asking me for cats' salami to feed these cats too. On the Internet a video of a dog who picked up food and carried it some distance to her puppies. Viewers click "like" . There is a house across the road with a garden, cats love the garden, the owners are not happy with this: "I found salami here. Attracts flies." It can't be much as it must be what the cat mummy  picked up from me, carried in her mouth across the road to feed her little ones. I am always worried watching cats crossing the road, but unfortunately I haven't got a garden. Further, I must accept that I can't save the whole world, neither all animals nor all who are poor. So much could be done if all tax payers (in particular the very rich) and all in power would be honest. Unfortunately we have too much greed, corruption, ignorance. -Like children, cats also learn by watching. When my 2 black cat ladies, Lilly and Felicitas, want to enter the sitting room, they knock at the door by hitting the key fob, Amelie and Alien started to do the same, likewise Honey walks around the house to my sitting room window and calls me when she wants to enter the house, Gloria (absolutely beautiful, great character and fantastic mum) does the same now. Parents give toys to their kids, what do cats do to provide their little ones with something to play with? They offer their tail, wag it, let the kittens catch it, they enjoy this game. Some times they  also play hide and seek with me (frequently underneath parked cars), often the mother helps me with "our" babies, another game: catch- me -if -you- can, stopping briefly to give me a better chance,  fair players, after all I can't run as fast on only 2 legs. Another advantage for 4 legs:  ball games, football as well as hand/paw balls. Pity, most of these football crazy kids aren't aware of this. Cats could be their really good companions. For training cats some times bring a live mouse to their kittens, to teach them how to catch one. I never watched this here, but in Europe I once had a tomcat, Filou, who brought me a live mouse upstairs to my first floor flat. He wanted to teach me how to catch a mouse. You know what, it worked, I managed to catch the poor frightened field mouse, pretended to eat it and secretly set it free outside in nature. This cat also knew how to open doors, including my fridge - he did it lying on his back -and took out what was mend for him anyway. From time to time Filou would punish me for "wrong behaviour", like not allowing me to stroke him when I get home  late, or emptying my book shelve because I went on a short holiday, leaving my brother to take care of him. Every cat is different with her/his own personality. I feel the loss every time one dies. Three hours ago sweet Luthuli, a black kitten of Gloria, ran out onto the street. At that moment a big delivery van arrived, before I had a chance to react, Luthuli got under one of the big wheels, a horrible sight, bloody head, bloody body twisting, rapid movements in all directions, some brain and lots of blood on the street. Eight hours before I played with the little darling. I feel like crying, his life had hardly started, such a horrible death. My nightmare here, I've seen so many die. - If you take the trouble to give names to cats, you'll find they will quickly all know their names, some even answer when I call them. I once had a cat, Mucker, whenever he was told off, would come, look you straight in the eyes and answer you back. Animals are not supposed to be able to do this. It seems to be strange to me that folks for a very long time believed animals can't think. Well, as a matter of fact, don't quite a few guys frequently act as if they can't? We have plenty of sunshine, the sea, beeches with very fine white sand, historic sites worth visiting, but not enough jobs, money, support for the poor, education for the ignorant, need laws to protect animals and people able and willing to ensure that folks abide by laws and good regulations (like those to protect the environment and people's health). The other day I viewed a fire in front of two garages, next to houses, in a residential area. Some persons where burning large pieces of wood, plastic and other rubbish. Not normal, a bit like the "wild west", also those kids riding motorbikes, usually without a number plate. In case of a fatal accident (lately a man from the neighbourhood died, the boys on the heavy motorbike were only 15 and 16 years old), will it be again: oh, they are still children, nothing one can do..... So sad, sounds like nothing can/will be changed. Let us not give up and hope for better days.

Saladin - Obituary

This is the story of Saladin, a gorgeous Persian tomcat. I am told Turkish folks brought them to Tunisia and that is why the people here call them "Turkish". Anyhow, approx. 2 years ago I found a lovely little Persian kitten in front of my entrance door. I could hardly trust my eyes, who would leave such a little bundle of joy just like that? I took him inside, gave him a bit of milk (1/3 milk, 2/3 mineral water, as advised by the vet) and cat food from the supermarket. Saladin grew up, a lively, gentle fur angel. He loved eating, whenever I prepared my little treasures' food, he seemed to think that I take too long and would jump up onto the sideboard to help himself. Trying to enter the kitchen without him following me seemed to be impossible, he was so fast and very sportive. One day kids informed me that I  have a cat sitting on my awning. To my surprise it turned out to be Saladin. With the aid of a long ladder I managed to take him down. Saladin must have jumped off the roof terrace. He did this also on another occasion. When Saladin suffered from diarrhoea, the vet advised me to stop his food for 24 hrs. This was hell for him and me, he cried for his food and looked at me with his lovely big eyes, not understanding what was going on. I had to lock him in the bathroom until all other cats had finished their meal. When I let him out, he checked all food bowls. No food anywhere within reach. So he finally decided  to jump off the roof terrace and onto my door awning. I happened to be outside and again kids discovered him first. Same procedure as before, felt so sorry for my little treasure, tried to reassure him that I still love him very much and reduced his short "Ramadan" to 20 hrs. I cooked chicken with rice and fine chopped carrots for Saladin and he really enjoyed his meal. For a while he was okay then his diarrhoea returned and he caught a cold. Running noses and conjunctivitis are a common problem here for cats (in particular during those periods with cold and wet days and/or nights). When he stopped eating, the vet explained that cats only eat what they can smell, with a blocked nose this isn't possible. Meanwhile I have my own little pharmacy for cats at home, which is just as well, as these little darlings don't like travelling in a transport box and several taxis don't like having them in the car (for "hygienic reasons" , utterly bullshit in view of a plastic transport box). With his prescribed medication (Marbocyl, in addition Kortison) and inhalation he got better. The vet informed me that a variation of food often causes diarrhoea. This was new to me, never experienced that with cats in Europe. For quite some time we believed that Saladin is dump.He moved his mouth as if he wanted to speak, but there was no sound. We heard his voice for the first time at the vet's, it took months. I did my best, but diarrhoea kept recurring. Saladin lost weight which didn't show straight away due to his lovely long fur. We bought an expensive special diet (croquets) from the vet. Strange, all the cats thought it's delicious, but Saladin didn't particular. I had to feed him separately, only occasionally offered a bit to a couple of other cats, in order to make these croquets more interesting to my little fur angel. It worked, thank heaven. Saladin was a good actor, apart from pretending to be dump, he sometimes pretended to eat, but spit his croquets out again, without me noticing at first. When the vet took blood from him to have it tested, she had to take it from a neck vein, as he got so skinny. Poor soul. The result of the blood test came as a real shock, only half as many erythrocytes as normal. The vet warned us that Saladin won't have much longer to live. For a couple of days my lovely gentle treasure (friendly with everyone and all the cats) seemed to get better. Wishful thinking. Saladin used to follow me around, seemed to be always at my side, the first one to greet me in the morning, purring. a gift from heaven. But only for 2 years. Some time between 23.oo hrs and 4 a.m. my beloved one passed away, Friday 04.05.18 or Saturday 05.05.18. I miss him so much, often, when he looked at me with his lovely big eyes, I wondered what he is thinking. He deserves to be in Paradise.

Spring Time

A commercial agent visited a poor farmer as he intended to sell him a milking machine. The poor farmer advised him that he's got only one cow and the bank won't give him a loan. So the commercial agent told him: "Not a problem, just give me your cow for payment" (Or did he say as first instalment?). - Thank heaven the days are getting warmer, but when it's cloudy the temperature drops considerably. As in previous years I either find kittens in a box in front of my entrance door or kids/teens or adults want to hand me 1 or 2 directly. I found in a book the advise, if you have too many kittens/cats, and no one to take them, leave them near a hotel, tourists will feed them. Looks like the advise here is, leave them with me or at my door step. Something has changed though, I managed this year to find new families for lovely little fur angels, so far for 6 (always 1 at a time) and in 1 case my shelter was only required temporarily as 1 little darling was already dearly missed by her family. (I don't like the expression "owner" and I refuse to see animals as objects.) - The other day I was surrounded by a group of young hooligans (or should I say disturbed kids  from the surrounding area?) demanding baby cats and sweets. This I refused for obvious reasons, helpless kittens should never be handed to children as toys, even worse to these here, no manners, no respect, no empathy. In addition I do not know what for I should reward them with sweets. When we first moved here, one lady warned us not to give any presents to these kids here, they would demand them daily, knocking on your door, without shame. I must admit I did not always follow her advise. Anyhow, they followed me to the garbage container place and back to my house, yelling together at ear-splitting level, I felt threatened. After I got inside my house, they banged at the door. As I rejected their demands they decided to take revenge and bend part of the iron strip that our locksmith had welded onto the net-iron sheeting (partly bend as well) outside, designed to protect our house and plants against  footballs and hooligans. By the way, if you think envy and revenge are perhaps typical shortcomings of many Arabic characters, you are mistaken. What about Donald Trump, his envy of B. Obama's achievements (e.g. "Obama-Care") and popularity, and Trump's constant firing of men he employed himself for high posts (ejector seat for those who dare to use their own brain), isn't this taking revenge? For all I know Trump is not an Arab, his family originates from Bavaria. -  An excavator briefly parked in this road, was discovered by a young boy, approx. 5 years old, he seemed to believe that this is a new toy his parents bought for him so that he can do bigger damages. A tradesman saw the little boy climbing up to the seat and he had to tell the kid 5 times to get off the vehicle, to him there appeared to be no reason to do that, what's on the street the children regard as their property and don't some car owners regret parking outside. Luckily the excavator was removed not long later. - The other day a young lady asked whether she can come inside to chose a cat. I informed her that I want to keep all the cats that I've been living with for a while  (up to 5 years), they are a kind of family for us. Sometimes I receive a request for a grey cat or a white cat, maybe I should create a catalogue ...... What do these people think, that I breed cats? One woman wanted one already vaccinated (approx. 90Dinar). I am not a charity organisation, I am only me, with limited means. In Germany I once got a cat from an animal protection organisation, fully checked, teeth done, vaccinated, great - but I had to pay for all this. To be fair, there are also different families in the neighbourhood, excellent manners, well behaving kids, the difference is amazing. They are like a ray of sunshine. Good to know them too. - Tony, a black and white tomcat, with a bigger head then usual, has a very special way of lifting his head and looking me straight in the eyes. He hasn't got a home and is a regular visitor to my cats' table. One day I noticed that he is loosing weight,  doesn't eat, just puts his nose near his food in an attempt to smell it, suffering from a cold this isn't possible. As cats only eat what they can smell (a protection by nature which can backfire though, as a blocked nose can lead to starvation in spite of available food); high time to clean his nose and add a cough remedy to his drinking water. It turned out he trusts me and just allows me to clean his nose and ears as often as necessary (cats hate this procedure). He is much better now and likes to hang around near my house. So  does a newcomer, a white cat, looking a bit neglected - a sign of sickness - and she had fleas (gave her a remedy). I wonder whether she had a home before and lost it when she got sick. The folks around here like white cats and she looks pretty with her long white hair, black cats are not so popular, uneducated people believe they bring bad luck. Wouldn't like to live without my 2 fantastic black lady cats, they are adorable. Whenever I am in the sitting room and they want to join me, they knock at the door, my lovely Lilly and Felicitas. Now Allien is copying them, but I won't let him come in as he likes to chew cables. When I have to distribute medication to my little darlings, I usually pulverise the pills and mix this under soft cheese. It can also help to pretend other cats are receiving the identical product and are enjoying it. The same kind of trick works with kids sometimes. - On the 16th of May Ramadan starts, this means neither food nor drink of any kind from sun rise until the sun goes down, if you are religious, no smoking in public or even taxi, unless you are a tourist. Communal election this month, most citizens say they won't vote, too disappointed with the administration ("Belladia"). The author Safwan M. Masri said in an interview on TV, France 24 that Tunisia is divided, there are those who want to live like Europeans and on the other hand those who would like to set the clock back, have woman dressed in black, Burka and head scarf. Safwan M. Masri just published a book: Tunisia an Arab Anomaly. (Haven't read it, can't judge). I am optimistic and pray for intelligent, decent, tolerant politicians who love and forward this country and successfully fight corruption.

Landlords and other Surprises

If you want to become a millionaire, the easiest way is to start off with a capital of a thousand billions. - If you are looking for a house to rent or buy, be prepared for many surprises. There is no legal maximum for rental charges, it is usual to charge 5 % increase annually, but any increase must be stipulated in the lease. Non-Tunisian residents from lets say a European country, who need their permit, carte sejour, extended annually, require a newly issued lease contract every year. They may be interested and have perhaps  been promised a long term contract, but the need to submit a fresh contract to the Tunisian authorities, puts them in a week position and for all I know quite a few landlords won't hesitate to make use of this.  Motto: what do I care for my silly prattle from yesterday. Don't relay on promises, gratitude or recommendations. People usually take money for recommendations so they don't care, happy to name unreliable, unsuitable persons who will give them money for this - our experience ever so often. Even a man we dismissed for stealing had the cheek to ask money from the next guy, as he took "his job". Some folks like to spend their money on enjoying life, travelling, celebrating, etc, others on furniture, decorations, trying to make their flat or house "their castle". If you belong to the second type, be careful whom you invite as you may be giving the impression you are rich and envy is an ugly feeling. This can easily also happen when your landlord views the rooms he rented to you and have an unwanted impact on your relationship. Hopefully your landlord isn't greedy and doesn't want to trick you, e.g. overcharge you for electricity, gas, water, etc. There are more tricks under the sun than you most probably imagine. Quite a few old-age pensioners leave their country because their monthly income is too low for a country with high costs of living and they don't want to live on social security or money from their children. There is a choice of countries in various continents with very much lower costs of living and perhaps as an additional bonus lots of sunshine, good for old bones. Yet it is not all that easy, the mentality of the folks and possibly language problems have to be taken into account apart from bureaucratic hurdles. An acquaintance of mine looking for a suitable flat or house was once offered to live in a family "like a family member, we look after you", she felt they wanted to make her a rich auntie, a bottomless source of income. The house she finally chose she tried to convert into a little castle while at the same time living rather modestly as she isn't exactly rich. Her landlord told this elderly widow that when she dies, he will lock the door and not allow her family to even remove a sheet of paper, everything that's there would automatically belong to him. Prior to that he declared a special armchair to be "his", hoping she would fall for that "evil eye" trick (if someone lays his/her eyes on something that belongs to you, something evil will happen, if you don't hand this item over). Bad luck, she never heard this before and isn't superstitios anyhow. Instead she offered this armchair to him at a reasonable price but he refused, stating he'll get it for free one day. While he and his wife were friendly in the beginning they later on changed and gave they impression they feared she may live longer than they anticipated and made her life difficult with all sorts of tricks. When she just couldn't take more of this and moved out, he managed to keep all her plants (exchanged the lock before her tenancy expired), an expensive table with 4 chairs "disappeared", nothing on camera, "she must have switched it off for the theft....." Judging by the amount of money this landlord made her pay for various bills I am sure she paid for the consumption of his family as well. Other landlords she had the misfortune to encounter I certainly wouldn't recommend as honest. Those who are honest may on the other hand meet tenants who are not. Life often isn't fair. After we bought our house an unknown person wrote in Arabic for sale on it. Having spend a lot of money, time and energy to make it look nice (neighbours were surprised to see me decorating), we had all sorts of reactions, from compliments to kids throwing stones and various damages. We often felt that some are perhaps trying to make us give up and sell the house cheap - maybe to them. The sad story is that several expats left Tunisia again, feeling they can't coope with the new mentality here. It is time for the silient majority to speak up and demand the neccessary changes. Make Tunisia a great country to be proud of, solidarity and support for the poor, don't waste the existing intelligence, why are so many with a university diploma unemployed or have to do accept jobs well below their qualifications? They could on the other hand help to forward this beauitiful country.

Cats, Kids and so on

Teacher: Ali, if you found a wallet with 100 thousand Dinar, would you report it? Student: If I know that it belongs to a poor man I would definitely hand it in. - Shakira, the golden yellow cat with one kitten of the same colour and two black ones (a bit older) that she adopted (as far as I can judge) looks well after her little ones. From time to time she leaves the basket to stretch her bones, but quickly returns. I check the kittens' eyes, which they open for the first time after approx. 9 days, yet sometimes the eyes get sealed again, with bad luck even filled with pus. Luckily I know how to handle this, something I learnt from a neighbour (first Physiol chlorure de sodium a 0,9%, clean eyes gently, then Pommade Ophtalmique). This time I discovered a walnut-sized swelling around the belly button of Shakira's little one. Before I could ask the vet (weekend), the baby kitten disappeared. I looked everywhere. There can be only one conclusion that I don't like very much. Mother nature has occasionally strange solutions. A sick/weak baby can endanger the whole family as it may attract the enemy. I experienced it once, when a dog gave birth to more puppies than I counted the next day, 2 weak ones had disappeared.(I tried very hard to find them, all in vain.) Shakira continued to feed and clean the black kittens. One day she walked out, in nature the mother has to find food and the little ones remain quiet, waiting for Mummy to return. Gloria, the other cat mother from time to time (as the kittens get a little bit older) goes for a walk, relaxes and leaves me to baby-sit. She trusts me fully, nice thought. Well Shakira did not return, I waited for 15 hrs and then decided to check whether Gloria would be prepared to adopt the black kittens. She did,   great mummy, guess what, 2 hrs later Shakira returned, looking for her kittens. It may be wrong, but I decided, as it wasn't certain after all, which cat is their actual mother,  to leave them with Gloria and her other babies.  They seem to get on very well and Gloria is the more experienced mum. I gave Shakira some food and water and she stayed over-night to sleep. On the next day she seemed to be looking for the black kittens again, went out and returned after a few hours. At times like this I wish I could explain the situation and get a reply from my cats. Well, we live and learn. Saladin, my lovely skinny Persian cat requires special food from the vet as he suffers from chronicle diarrhoea, always hungry but not putting on any weight. He tries to eat from all other plates on the floor. after a while I discovered that he's a good actor, pretends to eat and then spits it out again. He likes his food served in my hand, at least I can then control how much he then actually eats. I have to soak his croquets and hide them from my other cats, who are only to keen to have it as well. They even open doors for it. I am now prepared, lock the room door. Having had several cats operated (family planning forced onto them), I thought I could spare my Amelie (lovely Persian cat) the operation, as she lives in-doors and all tomcats have been operated. I had no previous experience with female cats and wasn't aware that when they are on heat, they suffer quite a bit when there is no admirer (tomcat) around. Similar situation with my other lovely ladies, Cinderella (white cat, darker coloured part of her face, her tail and paws, blue eyes) and Diana (Thailand cat, turquoise eyes, markings similar to those of Cinderella). All these beautiful little darlings I found right here, there are more outside but I can't provide shelter for more. Where do they come from? I feel pretty sure they or their parents/grandparents had a home before and the families moved away or gone abroad. Before the revolution I never viewed such a lot of gorgeous cats, many were then rather skinny, I guess cats can nowadays find better food outside (more/ better food thrown away?). My cats motivate me to get up really early in the morning, it's great, all the little trouble makers are fast asleep and we can enjoy a peaceful breakfast, only occasionally some dogs arrive, luckily well behaved and they disappear on my command. Dinner time is a different matter, the kids here love to spend every spare minute playing football, yelling at an ear-splitting level. Their balls fly in all directions against the  walls of the houses, onto the roofs, inside the yards, making even newly decorated walls look dirty, tatty. Due to oh so many bad experiences, cats fear these hooligans (as I mentioned before, stones are their favourite  toys, cats aren't even safe underneath cars). The children regard the streets as their home, including pavements, etc. why should I  have the right to feed cats on my pavement or get angry when their balls or stones hit/ damage my property or even worse, frighten or injure my fur friends? - A neighbour parked his car at  the side of my house, it has been there for quite a while now,  perhaps some folks believe it belongs to us. Anyhow, 2 tyres are now flat, one window is smashed and various parts are getting loose, attempts to dismantle by bored ignorant hooligans, one door-handle is missing, the owner hasn't got money for the repair and soon it will be beyond repair. The hooligans lack all feelings of wrong doing, they are difficult to catch as they learn from an early age onward to run fast and deny everything, even if you see them with a so-called smoking gun,. (apart from the running bit, isn't this what Donald Trump practises every day?). -  Prices have gone up, some items 10% , others between 30 and 50 %. Not easy for those who have no or only a low fixed income. A tailor told me she can't pay for the medication that her doctor prescribed for her. The flea markets with lots of clothing from Europe ruined her trade. Hardly anyone orders a new dress or other items,  the usual customer wants alterations at a low price as he/she didn't pay much in the first place for the respective item. I've been told the government intends to protect the local market and stop the influx of cheap second hand clothing from Europe. Many items were donated in Europe by persons who mend well, aid for the poor. The other aspect detonators are often unaware of, (a share of the clothing remains in Europe and often gets sold or given away by charity organisations) a large amount is sold in a big bulk to Africa. No domestic clothes store or tailor can of course compete with those flea market prices, a problem also in other African countries.Talking about selling, I found it surprising that bananas on the market are from South America (not Africa) and apples mainly from Europe (e.g. Tirol), not Tunisia, but at least oranges are and some other delicious fruits. Tinned fruit is rare and expensive, but who needs it? African leaders are meeting now aiming to make African countries support each other more, a bit like the European Union? (Exploitation, land grabbing, corruption keeps many countries poor.) By the way all posts on this block are solely written by me, also those stating a different writer. - While the winter doesn't seem to be prepared to leave Europe, even though it's spring time, we enjoy lovely sunshine, more than 30 degrees centigrade and there are more such days to come. Great to see the sun, hopefully healing many colds and flue attacks, my little treasures have been sunbathing on the roof, they love it and several are also trying to get rid of their cold. We are all welcoming the sun. Tunisia is blessed with better weather than many other part of the world who are less fortunate. At present a warm wind from the dessert (Sahara) is blowing gently.

More about Cats continued

Kitty is a beautiful black, orange and white coloured cat, about 5 months old and a regular visitor to my cats' table, well one day I discovered her indoors, eating out of a big bowl, among my other domestic little tigers as if she  belonged to my indoor fur-family. Since the other cats tolerated her, I decided to welcome the new member. While I concluded that my capacity (space and money) is exhausted, I was in for a surprise, as spring started. One day I discovered a golden-yellow coloured baby cat on a reserve cat's bed in the small corridor between my 2 entrance doors, a cat must have brought the baby cat there without me  noticing. I  tried in vain to find out which cat is the  mother, so I finally  decided to test whether gorgeous Gloria, who lately gave birth to 3 golden-white and 1 black and white kittens would accept the addition, well she did, either because she can't count up to 5 or because she has enough love to provide for 5 kids; it would be just like her, this gentle little darling.
That problem solved, there was another surprise awaiting for me the next day. Underneath my yucca plant I noticed 2 sweet black kittens. As before, no answer to my question, which cat is the mother? There aren't many black cats around here, besides the little ones may be looking just like daddy. I tried to bottle -feed the kittens (one third cow milk and two thirds mineral water). Not easy, they obviously prefer the real thing, a cat mum with  her milk. Next day I found another golden coloured kitten in front of my entrance door, this time in the company of 3 pregnant looking cats, 1 golden-yellow, 2 white with a bit of black and yellow, 2 acting as  if they are the mother. I carefully picked up the baby and put it in a cardboard box waiting how the 3 cats will react. I placed the box in front of my Studio door, so that the main entrance won't be blocked. The golden coloured cat picked up the kitten and returned it to the previous door. Then I found a good solution. I took a plastic basket and converted it into a bed for a new cat family, 1 golden and 2 black coloured baby kittens and a golden coloured mummy (hoping I picked the right mother). It worked, the little ones are happy and so is mummy, happy little family. My husband hasn't noticed yet, guess he'll say I am overdoing it, I can't save all the cats in the world. By the way, before this happened a neighbour told me he viewed a golden-yellow cat with her baby in her mouth coming to my entrance door, presumable waiting for me, after a while she walked away with her baby kitten. Not all stories have a happy end. Eliza's kittens all died, their mum moved them 3 times, not good choices, they had to spend cold nights on cold tiles, in a place where I couldn't reach them. I think the cat didn't have much experience, but did her best to protect her little ones against the hooligans here and other dangers. So sad. A boy, approx. 12 years old, approached my house with a big black dog, I think a mastiff, the dog was on a leash, but it looked as if the dog was walking the boy. Such a dog needs a man not a boy to take him for a walk. I just started to say don't take your dog near my house, when the dog dragged to my entrance door where 2 cats were sitting and within less than a second he snapped one of my fur friends. The cat was fighting for her life, a nightmare to watch. I tried to pull the dog away from my little gentle darling, teens started to kick and beat the dog, which he totally ignored, he just wouldn't let go of my cat. Later adults also tried to stop the dog, all in vain. I asked why isn't the dog muzzled, the boys answered he doesn't like it. The dog finally walked off, still carrying my cat like a prey. The following day kids told me the dog ate my cat (doesn't the family feed him?). I got really worried a similar incident could happen again and attempted to find out the address f the owner or at least get the message to him that such a dog is too dangerous to be outside without a muzzle, he could even attack children. Various persons stated the family doesn't live in the near neighbourhood, we don't know them. The standard excuse, " bad folks come from a different area", nice try to cover up, but unfortunately not very helpful. Later on  I heard a different story.  A worried father spoke with the owner. As it wasn't the first time that this dog showed his aggressiveness, the lady owner decided to have him put to sleep. The dog isn't to blame, people made him like that, either through special breeding or abuse. From time to time I view up to 4 dogs, golden retriever and different types, same size, as well as a smaller one approaching my house, carefully watched by the cats, but thank heaven, they are gentle, I don't need to throw stones, get a stick to frighten them, just say a couple of times "shirr", which means something like go away/ get lost. they halt, look at me and then walk away. -The tiny kitten, approx. 8 days old, that I had found inside my house and added to Gloria's little ones, unfortunately died three days later. Many kittens die very young, but it always makes me sad.

More about Cats

    1. Two women talking: It is not easy for her, she had quadruplets, just image 4 babies at the same time. Cat overhearing the conversation, thinking: But that's normal, nothing special, just wonder how many she'll be allowed to keep. - Cats aren't stupid, they know their names, (I gave to them) even those without a home, several know how to open a door, if I e.g. don't want too many in the kitchen while I'm out, I have to lock the door as otherwise one of the little darlings will open the door for all who wish to enter. My 2 black ladies (fur like

velvet), Lilly and Felicitas, knock on the sitting room door whenever they want to join me there. They are the best of friends, frequently sitting together on my lap, one of my other cats joining. One could think they are from one family, but they are not. By the way, cats generally don't like closed doors. Filou used to sit in front of my bathroom door and complain if I left him outside. He knew how to open my fridge and sometimes helped himself to food that was actually intended for him anyhow. But for opening tins he still needed me. A very sad day when he passed away. Saladin, a Persian cat, suffers a lot from colds, diarrhoea, always hungry (checks all food plats on the floor), but when the cold really hits him, stops eating. The vet explain that cats won't eat what they can't smell. She suggested some rather expensive special diet (Gastro Digestive Support) to stop his chronic diarrhoea. This nutrition turned out to be of great interest to all my little treasures but Saladin and I have to make sure they don't "steal" it of him. The cats here haven't got a good immune system, generally speaking, don't think they possess the so-called 7 lives, their teeth and gum is frequently in a bad state, the poor water quality with lots of scale takes its toll. When it gets really bad they can't eat and if this continues will die. My vet recommended "Vet aquadent, anti-plaque" a bit expensive (37 Dinar) but it lasts a long time and hopefully will improve matters. By the way, our doctor advised us not to drink the taped water and this is also what tourists are told. (Tunisia could really do with a water-treatment plant.) Luckily the mineral water is fairly cheap. If one can afford it, a better choice for cats too. Those who live out on the road or where ever, as they are without shelter, drink from puddles etc. unless kind folks put some water outside for them. - Eliza, a mainly white cat and regular visitor at my cats' table, gave birth to 4 sweet kittens during the night in one of my flower pots, next to my yucca plant, near my entrance door, it was a real surprise. The little family is well protected behind the metal fencing, but unfortunately difficult to reach (in case any help is needed). At least I can put food and water underneath the yucca plant, the dedicated mummy seems to be grateful for that but she makes at the same time sure that no one gets too close to her babies. On the whole cats are always on the alert here, the result of bad experience with even very small kids, teens and adults. Their brainless stone throwing and other abuses cause quite a few injuries and death. Lately I viewed a youngster kicking a cat like a football (making the cat pay because his parents don't love him and he dropped out of school?). It made me so angry, I hit him with my shoe to show him my contempt. The next day, another disturbed young man tried to beat a cat with a string, "just for fun". I informed him that his IQ is like that of a loaf of bred, hope it'll make him realize how stupid his action was, nothing to be prowd of.  What happened to this new generation, why are some so ugly? Tunisia urgently requires laws for the protection of animals and of course employees who ensure that children and adults abide by the law. This would also make Tunisia more attractive for Tourists who are not at all happy to watch the abuse of animals. I am not saying that animals are always well treated in Europe, but there in particular cats and dogs are often seen as a kind of family member and folks really enjoy their unconditional love and friendship. Kids with a disturbed attitude, who believe chasing animals, throwing stones at them, is normal, have no feeling of wrong-doing when they injure or even kill them, really miss out, besides, are they likely to become good citizens one day, loving parents? There are of course also children from good families who love and respect animals. One mother told me, now that her son got a cat, he is so much more relaxed, another mum that her little one cried all night because the cat disappeared. They were so happy when they discovered the kitten underneath a blanket. I regard animals as a present from heaven. The money that I was intending to spend on travelling to various African countries, I now use trying to protect and help cats and I don't regret it. They are so wonderful, these little darlings. People here unwittingly made me change my plans. I try to also make the kids think twice before getting up to no good, besides, no sweets (or other presents) for throwing stones. This is what "Madam Bonbon" (appears to me my new name here) says. Tunisia can be a great country, this requires not looking the other way and speaking up when necessary, educate the ignorant, children also have brains they can use, don't apologise everything.
